FossilPlants is a BGCI accredited ’backyard’ botanic garden on a mission to protect threatened plant species through ex-situ conservation and restoration.

Our garden may only be small (115 m²) but it has a dinosaur sized character.

Most of the plants in the garden are from families that have a fossil record more than 66 million years old or they have their ancestry rooted firmly, somewhere deep in the earths prehistory. The evolution of the huge diversity of plantlife fascinates us.

We started the garden in 2011 after moving into our house in North Wales although we soon realised that we needed our garden to be more than just ‘our back garden’. The plants we grow need to do far more than just look nice so we joined the world’s botanic garden community and use our garden for science, education and, most importantly, plant conservation. It became a ‘backyard botanic garden’.

In 2016 we opened a research facility (the PCRN) where we aim to better understand the cultivation of threatened plant species – assisting in creating ex-situ options for their  conservation.

The work we do is funded through the personal income of the owners. As more and more plant species become threatened in our changing world the importance of the work we do increases. You can really help us in our work to research the cultivation and conservation of threatened plants by donating to our Plant Conservation Research Nursery (PCRN) project, its easy to do, just click the donate button.

The garden is open to visitors, although this is strictly by prearranged appointment (maximum group size is 10), just drop us a line to find out more.

We are proud to be a BGCI accredted botanic garden.
